And then I smile, realizing that as long as his incredible music survives and plays forth, Jerry will live forever. I ponder sadly at the thought of Jerry Goldsmith passing away before he could see his labors bear fruit. I think now of that lunch eighteen years ago. We went on to other projects and the years passed. Add how frustrated he was at having all of that hard work truncated in the final picture and it wasn't hard to see why he didn't want to revisit his score. He also used unorthodox recording techniques with an echoplex right on the stage to get unique reverberating sounds from the strings. He simply answered, 'I could never get it down on tape again.' He went on to elaborate how it was probably his most complex score and had taken vast resources in 1979 to record it, including a large orchestra, plus players on serpents, didgeridoos and conch shells. Without missing a beat, I asked, 'Why?' After all, so much music had been left out of the picture and the soundtrack album. The myth was further dispelled when he actually began the conversation by asking, 'What should we go back and do next?' Before I could answer he added firmly, '-as long as it isn't Alien.' Now we were in London, spending four days together re-recording another score he'd written many years ago. In 1986 I had commissioned his first detailed look backwards with Islands in the Stream (1977) while he was working in Hungary. Jerry's reputation for having little interest in his earlier work was already being challenged. We were taking a break between recording sessions for Rio Conchos (1964) when Jerry invited me to lunch, one on one. The efforts to restore the complete music for Jerry Goldsmith's Alien reach back to 1989 in London. Parker's Death (demonstration excerpt) (1:08)ġ7. Hanging On (demonstration excerpt) (1:08)ġ5. The movie on the whole is worth at least one watch for sure but I cannot stress enough to you, do not let CSM or the "family feature" label of the DVD fool you. It was also cool to see a 24 year old Dennis Quaid as well. ![]() It was neat to see a 21 year old Daniel Stern before he starred in huge hits like Home Alone and City Slickers. It picked up and got better towards the end. Definitely watchable albeit a bit slower than what I thought it would be. There is also some fist-fighting in a school cafeteria although it is brief and nobody is seriously injured. ![]() The main character also lies as his father does and deceives a girl he is interested in. Daniel Stern's character makes a very inappropriate comment about women's breasts. He also insults and belittles his son out of frustration for not knowing how to relate to him. Additionally he is a car salesman who is dishonest and teaches his son that it is ok to be dishonest to succeed in that business. ![]() The main characters father is bigoted especially towards Italians. Lots of GD said and "s-", bastard, bitch hell damn, every profanity you can think of except the f word and rather frequently at that. But the language in this alone would merit a PG-13 easily today. Keeping in mind this was released before the creation of the PG-13 rating this film has a family-oriented PG rating. The movie was a famous flop that represented a career low-point for Martin Scorsese, but Sinatras version of the song from 1979 became such a standard that. This is not a family movie by any means and it is absolutely inappropriate for smaller children and in my opinion for pre-teenagers. I am surprised at the reviews here on CSM saying this is a family movie.
